Every weekend, thousands of Americans gather to re-enact the battles of the Civil War, lining up
against one another in the historical roles of blue vs grey. They do this
instead of going to church, watching football, or any other traditional
leisure-time activity considered normal by the rest of the country.
In early 2002, we began documenting the re-enacting subculture as
it appears around Southern California, where no Civil War battle actually
took place. We soon fell in with a close-knit group of Confederate
re-enactors, and the film “Rebel Yell” was born.
“Rebel Yell” follows Killer, Crazy Larry, Diana, Jim Quatro, and
Chris through three years of their lives. We follow them on the field during
the day, in the camps at night, and home into their private lives.
This is as “in” as you will ever get without buying your own uniform.
